Recent satellite images have revealed the alarming extent of two wildfires spreading across Southern California. The first wildfire, known as the Sandy Fire, ignited on Monday morning in Simi Valley, approximately north-west of Los Angeles, as reported by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Imagery captured just after noon local time (20:00 BST) on Monday displayed a significant plume of smoke emanating from the area. As of Tuesday morning, officials stated that about 750 firefighters were supported by night-flying water dropping helicopters to address hotspots.

According to local police, the fire originated from an incident where an individual hit a rock with a tractor. The Sandy Fire has spread across 1,364 acres (over 550 hectares) and remains completely uncontained, as indicated by recent data from NASA's wildfire monitoring platform that shows active hotspots shifting further south.

In light of the fire's rapid growth, more than 10,000 homes in Simi Valley and nearby communities have been evacuated, with an additional 3,500 residences under warning to evacuate, reaching into regions of neighboring Los Angeles County. Officials, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, emphasize caution despite expectations that the blaze may not reach the city.

The speed of the fire's spread was initially propelled by high winds on Monday morning, although conditions calmed later in the day. In response to the ongoing emergency, the Simi Valley Unified School District has canceled classes at all campuses for the time being.

In addition to the Sandy Fire, a second fire burning on Santa Rosa Island has affected around 14,600 acres (6,000 hectares) of the Channel Islands National Park. Initially reported on Friday, this blaze has also seen limited containment by California fire officials, with around 70 firefighters and park rangers currently engaged in combating the flames.

The island, known for its unique ecosystem, has prompted the US Coast Guard to rescue a 67-year-old man stranded on its shore. As firefighting aircraft monitor the flames from above, combined efforts are being made to manage and contain these devastating wildfires throughout California.
