French law enforcement authorities took swift and unusual action today at Ecault beach, located south of Boulogne, as they intercepted a small inflatable boat that was overloaded with migrants—including men, women, and children—struggling in the waves. Utilizing knives, the police slashed the defective vessel, prompting frantic scenes as passengers scrambled to safety amid the collapsing boat.
This intervention marks a departure from standard operating procedure, as French police are generally restricted from entering the water due to safety protocols aimed at minimizing risk. However, amidst increasing pressures to address the surge of migrant crossings to the UK, a gendarme decided to act. "Let’s go in," one officer declared as he removed his body armor and readied himself with a knife, followed by his colleagues, who also stripped off their heavy gear.
Sources indicate that this incident may signal a tactical shift within the French police force. While there is consideration of using patrol boats for sea interceptions to prevent "taxi-boats" from being fully loaded, the focus appears to remain on avoiding more aggressive beach interventions.
The UK prime minister’s spokesperson acknowledged the event as a "significant moment" and expressed approval of the police action. "We want to see tougher action taken, that’s precisely the focus of our work," he stated.
Visible just offshore, the migrant boat was in distress, with its passengers crowded around a stalling motor. As waves crashed against the hull, distressing cries echoed, particularly from children fearing for their safety. Earlier, throngs of individuals clad in orange life jackets had emerged from the dunes, rushing towards the sea, only to find the first taxi-boat already at capacity.
As the inflatable boat struggled, officers stood by initially, reiterating their limitations under current protocols that only allow sea entry for rescue missions. Yet, as chaos ensued, they determined that action was necessary, citing the immediate danger to those on board.
In a moment of urgent decision-making, the officers took the opportunity to disable the boat while distracted smugglers attempted to restart the engine. As the inflatable was slashed, cries rose from the concerned passengers. Notably, a young girl was rescued from the fracas before the boat was subsequently pulled ashore.
Once on the beach, migrants gathered their belongings and headed inland towards the nearest village, retracing their steps to migrant camps further north, underscoring yet another chapter in the ongoing challenges of illegal crossings across the English Channel.
