Bill Gates Faces Three Key Questions in Congressional Hearing Over Epstein Ties

Bill Gates at Capitol Hill Gates, the Microsoft co‑founder, walked into Washington to answer questions about his past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The House Oversight Committee is set to probe the nature and extent of this association.

Gates said he was aware of Epstein’s criminal past but had no reason to suspect wrongdoing. “I was foolish to spend time with him. I was one of many who regret ever knowing him,” he told reporters. Yet the Committee’s lead Democrat, Robert Garcia, warned legislators that “Bill Gates was still communicating with Jeffrey Epstein, even after some of this kind of horrific information was public.” The main queries will focus on: what prompted Gates to associate with a convicted sex offender, how he ignored Epstein’s criminal record, and whether Epstein sought influence or possibly blackmailed Gates.

The DOJ released more than three million pages of documentation that featured Gates’ name over 5,000 times, including photographs of the pair at a private jet and other events. Emails allegedly attributed to Epstein claim that Gates’ foundation sought philanthropic funding from the disgraced financier, a venture that ultimately did not materialise. While Gates openly denied any illicit activity, the Committee will examine how he, a prominent technocrat, remained largely unaware of Epstein’s legal investigations.

The hearing highlights the growing scrutiny of public figures who have ties to Epstein: Gates is one among many who have been questioned or faced reputational damage. For many constituents, the central question remains: why spend time with someone who was not delivering on the promised funds? The Committee plans to ask whether Epstein was using Gates’ global reach to influence philanthropic decisions or to conceal illicit behaviour. The answers could reshape public sentiment on both the philanthropic sector and congressional oversight.
