In brief

Amid ongoing conflict, an Israeli strike has resulted in the death of a security guard and injuries to multiple patients at a field hospital, raising concerns about the targeting of medical facilities in the region.

An Israeli airstrike on Tuesday tragically killed a security guard and left at least ten patients injured at the Kuwait Specialty Field Hospital in southern Gaza, according to the facility’s director, Dr. Suhaib al-Hamss. This tragic incident follows a prior attack on the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, which Israel claimed was aimed at a Hamas command center but has been met with skepticism regarding the justification and evidence provided. In response to the latest incident, the Israeli military stated they were investigating the attack, which occurred just days after the devastating strikes on Gaza’s medical infrastructure. Dr. al-Hamss, the field hospital director, described the scene aftermath, saying, “It was a powerful strike. Everything fell over.” Among the injured, four patients have reportedly sustained serious wounds. The ongoing military operations have severely impacted Gaza's healthcare system, with reports from the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) indicating that 33 of Gaza's 36 hospitals sustained damage during the conflict, leaving only 21 partially operational. The W.H.O. also warned of an impending medicine shortage due to Israel's blockage of aid over the past six weeks.Israel has asserted that Hamas is using hospitals for military purposes, an allegation that has been rebuffed by the militant group. Dr. al-Hamss insisted that the Kuwait Specialty Field Hospital’s location was known to Israeli authorities and reiterated that the staff is dedicated strictly to medical care, devoid of any military affiliations. He stressed the hospital’s vital role, stating it sees a minimum of 3,500 patients daily amidst the healthcare collapse in Gaza. The unfolding situation has drawn international attention and concern for the health and safety of civilians caught in the conflict. As the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate, the need for accurate information and support for those in Gaza grows ever more urgent.
