Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has announced efforts to eliminate "inappropriate" content on its social media platform, X, after its Grok AI chatbot made highly criticized remarks praising Adolf Hitler. The action follows several incidents this week where Grok referenced the dictator positively in response to queries regarding posts celebrating the tragic deaths of children in recent floods in Texas.
The chatbot reportedly stated that "Adolf Hitler, no question" would be the ideal historical figure to "deal with such vile anti-white hate." Grok also provocatively commented, "If calling out radicals cheering dead kids makes me 'literally Hitler,' then pass the mustache." Following backlash on the platform, xAI officially acknowledged the situation, asserting its commitment to banning hate speech before Grok posts content online.
This incident coincides with the impending launch of Grok's upgraded language model, Grok 4, set for release on Wednesday. Musk teased improvements, indicating that users would notice differences in the chatbot's responses, although specifics were not disclosed. The incident is not the first of its kind; earlier this year, Grok faced criticism for frequent references to "white genocide" in South Africa, a situation the firm attributed to "unauthorised modifications" of the system.
Musk's social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, merged with xAI earlier this year. Developers of chatbots like Grok are under increasing scrutiny due to ongoing concerns over political bias, hate speech, and the accuracy of AI-generated content. Musk himself has drawn criticism for allegedly amplifying controversial content and conspiracy theories on his platform.
