In brief

In the wake of Tropical Storm Sara, Honduras is facing significant challenges as torrential rain has isolated more than 1,700 communities. After four days of relentless rainfall, officials report one confirmed death and over 110,000 impacted residents.

Rescue operations are underway amid ongoing hazards from swollen rivers and destroyed infrastructure. The deluge linked to Sara began Thursday, stemming from the Caribbean Sea, and quickly turned into a catastrophic weather event for northern parts of Honduras. Recent reports indicated that an astonishing 500mm (19.7 inches) of rain has resulted in overflowed rivers, creating perilous conditions and rendering numerous roads and bridges impassable. In total, nine bridges were washed away by powerful currents, while another 19 suffered damage, and many highways became blocked due to landslides. This prompted a proactive response from Honduran President Xiomara Castro, who had alerted residents near rivers to evacuate before the storm’s intensity peaked.Emergency services, working diligently in the aftermath, are going door to door to assist those trapped by the flooding. The situation remains urgent, with more than 2,500 homes sustaining damage and over 200 completely destroyed. As Sara transitions into Mexico's Quintana Roo region, forecasters predict further weakening of the storm. Nevertheless, meteorological experts attribute the increasing frequency and severity of such storms to elevated sea surface temperatures associated with climate change.Sara marks the 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season and follows the recent impact of Hurricane Rafael, which left Cuba facing widespread power outages. The abnormal activity of this hurricane season continues to raise concerns about human-influenced climate patterns exacerbating natural disasters in the region.
