In brief

As torrential rains continue to batter South Korea, four fatalities have been reported alongside the evacuation of over 1,300 residents due to extreme flooding conditions.

Four people have tragically lost their lives as heavy rains inundate regions of South Korea, prompting emergency evacuations of more than 1,300 individuals. Among the deceased are two elderly men, one of whom was reportedly attempting to clear floodwaters from his basement when he was overcome. A third victim died when a collapsing wall crushed his car, and the fourth succumbed to a cardiac arrest amidst the chaos. This intense weather system has prompted authorities to declare the highest level of disaster alert due to unprecedented rainfall, with areas like Seosan experiencing over 400mm of rain in a mere six hours. Residents are sharing distressing accounts of homes submerged, with one local lamenting online, "Everything is covered by water except the roof of my house." In Gwangju, another severely affected city, 426mm of rain fell, resulting in numerous local businesses, including a cafe owned by Kim Ha-min, being forced to close due to flooding and sewage issues. Injuries have also emerged, with reports of hypothermia and leg injuries. The meteorological administration attributes the extreme downpour to a clash of dry air from the north and humid air from the south, creating massive rain clouds. While authorities continue to manage the situation with evacuations and warnings against approaching precarious areas, forecasts indicate a possible return to high temperatures next week, raising concerns about future weather patterns.
