In brief

Sophie Lloyd, who disguised herself as a man to join the Magic Circle in 1991, has finally been welcomed back into the prestigious organization, marking a significant shift in its history.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Magic Circle, one of Britain’s most prestigious magic societies, honored its first female member, Sophie Lloyd, on Thursday night, rectifying an oversight that dated back over three decades. This acknowledgment comes after a 1991 incident when Lloyd, under the alias of "Raymond Lloyd," cleverly disguised herself as a man to gain entry into the male-only society. During a ceremony at the Magic Circle's London headquarters, Marvin Berglas, the club’s president, stated, “Tonight, we do what we should have done long ago,” symbolizing a heartfelt apology and a historic reunion. In the months following her initial acceptance, Lloyd and her accomplice revealed their true identities as women just as the Magic Circle began to accept female members. However, this revelation led to her expulsion from the group. The 48-year-old member, Maddie Spencer, reflected on Lloyd's unprecedented trick, calling it "an amazing ruse," as it successfully deceived an entire room of fellow magicians. After years of speculation and fragmented memories, the Magic Circle made a public appeal last November to locate Lloyd, recognizing the need to amend past mistakes.Thursday night’s event was not merely a formal apology but a performance worthy of a magician’s craft. This marked an essential shift within the organization, acknowledging their past failures and celebrating diversity within the art of magic.
