Trump Envisions New Camp David‑Style Retreat at Florida Golf Club

Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to transform his West Palm Beach golf property into a presidential retreat, mirroring the historic Camp David. The proposal would see the golf club offer free memberships to future presidents and provide secure lodging for visiting foreign leaders.
In a statement made in the Oval Office, Trump said the idea was first suggested by Secret Service officials and called it "a great idea." He added that the club’s proximity to the airport and the lack of surrounding high‑rise buildings would offer the safest possible environment for the president and guests.
According to a September letter obtained by the Palm Beach Post, the golf club would front construction costs as a gift to Americans. The club would also be designated as a "U.S. Presidential Golf Course," allowing future presidents to use all facilities at no cost to the federal government.
The proposal has sparked debate over the public versus private nature of the use of a private club for presidential purposes. While Trump’s administration argues the project enhances national security and delivers a unique retreat option, critics question the financial burden on taxpayers and the precedent of other controversial presidential projects, such as the White House ballroom and a proposed triumphal arch.
Supporters of the plan point to the club’s existing luxury amenities, including a 27‑hole course, fine dining, and a lavish clubhouse, which would create a secure, quiet environment far from the bustle of Washington. Nonetheless, the proposal remains under discussion, and officials have yet to release formal plans or cost estimates for the conversion.
