PARIS - French President Emmanuel Macron is known for his direct access to leaders, and he recently showcased this during the UN General Assembly in New York.

While trying to cross a street that had been blocked for a VIP motorcade, Macron encountered police officers who informed him he could not pass. Not one to miss the moment, he pulled out his phone and called President Donald Trump. How are you? Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you! he quipped.

A French official later confirmed that Trump was indeed on the other end of the line as Macron sought passage to France’s diplomatic mission after delivering an important speech at the UN.

In his speech, Macron announced France's recognition of Palestinian statehood, part of a broader effort to promote a two-state solution in the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict (more here).

Macron explained to the police that he was trying to walk forward with a group of ten people. Despite the blockage, the officers expressed their apologies. I’m sorry, President, I’m really sorry, it’s just that everything’s frozen right now, one replied.

After a brief wait, Macron was able to proceed, continuing his conversation with Trump about arranging discussions concerning Gaza.

The interaction goes to show how even in moments of inconvenience, Macron is quick to engage in meaningful dialogue on global issues.
