In brief

Following an extensive investigation into the theft of over 63,000 Bluey coins, police have successfully recovered more than 40,000 coins and made multiple arrests linked to the case.

Authorities in New South Wales have announced the recovery of approximately 40,061 stolen limited-edition coins associated with the beloved children's TV series Bluey. The coins, which were minted by the Australian Mint, had been stolen from a warehouse in Western Sydney back in July, just two months prior to their intended release into circulation. The police operation culminated in a raid conducted on Tuesday at a property located six miles (10 km) from the warehouse. The recovery came shortly after authorities detained 27-year-old Christina Vale, who faces charges of breaking and entering as well as disposing of stolen goods. Vale is the third individual to be arrested in connection with the theft.Initially, a total of 63,000 coins were reported stolen, each valued at A$1 ($0.65; 50p). However, following the theft, the coins reportedly began selling online for up to ten times their face value. In response to the brazen heist, New South Wales Police initiated a specialized investigation dubbed Strike Force Bandit, named after Bluey's father from the series. This investigation led to previous arrests in August, including that of 44-year-old Steven Nielsen, a warehouse employee, and his alleged accomplice, Nassar Kanj. Police intend to argue in court that Vale acted as the getaway driver for the pair during the heist. The coins in question, which are commonly referred to as Bluey dollarbucks—reflecting the show's unique vocabulary—depict various characters from the series. Bluey has garnered immense popularity both domestically and internationally, broadcasting in over 60 countries, including the UK, US, and China. Last year alone, it achieved over 20 billion streaming minutes on Disney+ in the US, ranking among the top 10 most-watched programs. As anticipation builds, an interactive Bluey-themed experience is set to open next month in Brisbane. It's worth noting that these stolen coins differ from another collectible Bluey currency that ignited significant excitement during its release by the Royal Australian Mint in June.
