In brief
The Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza has suffered extensive damage due to Israeli airstrikes, leading to injuries among both patients and medical personnel. The Israeli military is currently reviewing the incident while accusations of targeting healthcare facilities persist.
Israeli bombardment caused severe damages to Kamal Adwan Hospital, resulting in injuries to both patients and medical staff. The health ministry and hospital officials reported that ongoing shelling hit the facility located in Jabaliya, a congested area just north of Gaza City, on Monday. This event follows a recent Israeli offensive where numerous individuals, including medical staff, were detained.Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyeh, the hospital's director, recounted the harrowing conditions during an interview, noting that for at least three hours, the hospital faced relentless artillery fire. “I can’t leave the floor I am in,” he expressed, adding that some medical teams were injured, unable to reach each other due to the ongoing attacks. In an official statement, the Gazan health ministry remarked upon the series of targeted strikes, characterizing their claims as a “distress call” amid worsening conditions. However, the nature of munitions involved was not confirmed. In the latest military accounts, the Israeli army mentioned that they had facilitated the evacuation of patients and staff from both Kamal Adwan Hospital and another medical facility, Al-Awda Hospital, while providing them with humanitarian aid.Historically, Israeli officials have defended airstrikes on hospitals, alleging the presence of Hamas operatives using healthcare establishments as shields. Hospital officials, backed by human rights organizations, vehemently contest such allegations, asserting that the systematic targeting of critical infrastructure within Gaza, including hospitals, has been deliberate on Israel's part.
