A Brazilian tourist identified as Juliana Marins was discovered deceased after falling off a cliff while hiking Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano. The incident occurred on a steep trail during an early morning hike with friends and a guide. Initial reports from rescuers indicated they heard her cries for help following the fall, but adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain complicated rescue efforts.
Marins, 26, was backpacking through Southeast Asia and had arrived in Indonesia after visiting Thailand and Vietnam. She fell from a dangerous section of the trail at approximately 6:30 AM local time. Witnesses described the path as slippery and visibility as poor, making the trek particularly challenging. Drone footage circulating on Brazilian media captured her in distress shortly after her fall, indicating she was still alive and moving, but rescuers could not reach her in time.
Over the course of several days, rescuers struggled against thick fog and treacherous terrain. The search was hindered further when thermal drones became ineffective due to the weather. After locating her again on Monday, the rescue operation was forced to pause due to worsening conditions. It resumed on Tuesday, when teams finally descended 600 meters down a ravine to reach her body.
Efforts to retrieve her remain ongoing as bad weather persists. The rescue operation involved around 50 personnel, as per statements from Indonesia's search and rescue agency, and highlights the risks associated with hiking the popular tourist attraction, which has seen numerous incidents in recent years. Marins's family expressed sadness at the outcome, noting their gratitude for the support received, while also raising concerns over the trail’s safety regulations.
