In brief

Authorities have revealed that Dominique Pelicot, a man already sentenced for drugging and assaulting his wife, may have been involved in multiple crimes prior to his notorious conviction.

In December, Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to two decades in prison for the horrific acts committed against his wife Gisèle from 2011 to 2020. His case has sent shockwaves through France, turning his spouse into a symbol for the feminist movement. Yet investigators now suspect that the violence may not have stopped with Gisèle. Her attorney, Antoine Camus, expressed concerns that there may be many more victims yet to be identified. While awaiting his trial, Pelicot faced scrutiny for DNA evidence implicating him in the attempted rape of a 19-year-old woman in 1999. After a prolonged interrogation session, he was reported to have confessed, affirming, "It is me."Moreover, his involvement in the 1991 rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman is also under investigation. Although Pelicot denies any wrongdoing in this case, he has been charged for both incidents, as they share striking similarities: Each victim was a young real estate agent, was violently assaulted, restrained, drugged, and discovered in a disturbingly similar state, leading authorities to suspect a pattern. As investigations deepen, the horrifying reality of Pelicot's actions raises questions about public safety and the importance of exposing hidden abuse.
