In brief
A recent report reveals major lapses in addressing sexual abuse claims against clergy in the Philippines, raising concerns among the Catholic faithful.
January 29, 2025, 6:22 a.m. ET – A watchdog organization, Bishop Accountability, has raised alarms about what it describes as a culture of impunity surrounding the Catholic Church in the Philippines, identifying numerous priests accused of sexual abuse who continue to serve actively within the ministry. The findings revealed that 82 clerics with connections to the Philippines have faced public allegations of abuse in recent decades, with records compiled from reliable media sources, court documents, and church archives. Disturbingly, not a single cleric has faced conviction for sexual abuse in the nation, as highlighted by Bishop Buenaventura Famadico. The allegations pose significant challenges for the Catholic Church, which has been grappling with an ongoing global scandal. The Philippines, home to around 85 million Catholics and ranking third in the world by population, is also seen as a critical region for the Church's future growth. Pope Francis has urged that every diocese implement transparent systems for reporting abuse and related cover-ups, yet observers, including co-director of Bishop Accountability Anne Barrett Doyle, suggest that meaningful change is lacking on the ground in the Philippines. “He sent them forth to really change things up,” Doyle emphasized, but noted that this transformation remains unnoticeable in the country, where the shadow of unreported abuse looms large.Doyle's organization, established in 2003, has been instrumental in tracking and documenting similar abuse reports in countries like the United States, Ireland, and Chile, pointing to a broader issue of accountability amidst ongoing silence surrounding clerical abuse. As the issues of clerical abuse continue to unfold in the Philippines, the repercussions will likely resonate throughout the global Catholic community, prompting urgent calls for reform and transparency.
