In brief

In northeastern Colombia, over 54,000 people have fled their homes due to intensifying violence between rival rebel factions blamed on increased activities from the National Liberation Army, operating from Venezuela.

In the forgotten corners of northeastern Colombia, farmers and their families endure the brunt of an escalating conflict that has seen over 54,000 fleeing their homes. This latest outbreak of violence has resulted in nearly 80 deaths over just a few days, marking some of the worst bloodshed the region has witnessed in a generation. The violence is primarily generated by a battle for control of territory and drug trafficking routes between two rebel groups. But this resurgence of chaos can also be attributed to the collapse of previous peace agreements and, crucially, the influence of Venezuela. As Venezuela has succumbed to autocratic rule in recent years, its government has moved closer to the ELN (National Liberation Army), the rebel group at the heart of the recent violence in Colombia. This connection has emboldened the ELN, which has intensified its operations, causing regional unrest.Reports from the Catatumbo region indicate a humanitarian crisis; displaced families huddle in makeshift shelters, schools transformed into refuges for the fleeing population. Diplomatic efforts led by Colombia's President Gustavo Petro seem inadequate in countering the spillover effects from Venezuela. As the death total climbs, the situation remains dire, highlighting the urgent need for solutions to this enduring conflict that continues to wreak havoc on innocent lives.
