Tom Cruise recently paid heartfelt tribute to his late co-star Val Kilmer during his appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where Kilmer was honored following his death at the age of 65. Leading a moment of silence in The Colosseum theatre, Cruise spoke fondly of Kilmer, referring to him as a “dear friend” and praised his talent and character.
“I can’t express how much I revered his art and what he meant to me as a person. I was immensely grateful for his presence in Top Gun,” Cruise stated, recalling Kilmer's role as Iceman in the classic 1986 film. Cruise's remarks come shortly after Kilmer's death from pneumonia, a complication following his battle with throat cancer.
The tribute was part of Cruise's speech during the Paramount Pictures presentation. As the audience of industry professionals bowed their heads in respect, Cruise continued, "Thank you, Val - wish you well on your next journey."
The tribute coincided with the unveiling of a sneak peek of his upcoming film, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, where he showcased some of his signature stunts. Kilmer’s performance alongside Cruise in the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, marked his final film role.
Cruise has previously expressed his emotional attachment to their time working together, even sharing that he was moved to tears upon Kilmer's presence on set for the sequel. The late actor’s family confirmed he had undergone two tracheotomies due to his illness, which led to his need for a voice box. In his final scene with Cruise’s character in Maverick, Kilmer poignantly tells him, “The Navy needs Maverick,” showcasing the lasting impact of their bond, both personally and on-screen.
As tributes pour in from all corners of Hollywood, Cruise's heartfelt acknowledgment reflects the profound legacy Kilmer leaves behind as an exceptional talent and irreplaceable friend.
