Human remains, believed to be of a man wanted on suspicion of murdering his three daughters, aged nine, eight, and five, have been found in the US state of Washington.
Police had been searching for Travis Decker since officers discovered his phone along with the bodies of his daughters, Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia, in a remote campground on June 2. His truck was also found nearby.
While positive identification has not yet been confirmed, preliminary findings suggest the remains belong to Travis Decker, according to a statement from the Chelan County Sheriff's Office.
The remains were uncovered in a remote wooded area south of Leavenworth, Washington.
Decker, 32, faced charges of kidnapping and first-degree murder, and officials believe he had been hiding in the mountainous parts of the state. His daughters' mother reported them missing on May 30, after Decker failed to return them after a visit.
Authorities stated that the girls had died from apparent suffocation, with their wrists bound using zip ties. Decker, an ex-soldier, possibly attended mountain survival school as part of his military training, according to officials.
It sounds like at times he would go out and be off-grid for sometimes up to two and a half months, Sheriff Morrison mentioned after talking to Decker's family.
The remains were found on Grindstone Mountain, just a few miles from where the daughters' bodies were discovered in June, as reported by CBS's local news partner KIRO-TV.
A $20,000 reward was announced by the US Marshals Service for information on Decker's capture, and the search had led to widespread closures of popular hiking areas.
