In brief
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil is on the mend in an intensive care unit after undergoing emergency surgery to address bleeding in his skull. The medical team revealed that this complication stems from a fall he incurred in October. The surgery, described as “uneventful” by his doctors, took place at a São Paulo hospital where Lula is expected to stay for at least 48 hours.
Lula, 79, was admitted to the Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Brasília with severe headaches and flu-like symptoms. Following an MRI that indicated intracranial hemorrhage, he was swiftly transferred to São Paulo for surgery, which lasted approximately two hours. Doctors reported that the operation did not alter his brain function, and there were no adverse side effects. Dr. Roberto Kalil, a key member of his medical team, noted that Lula is now stable and responsive, able to engage in conversation and eat normally. He will continue to be monitored closely in the following days as part of his recovery process.
