The iconic US sitcom Malcolm in the Middle is gearing up for a four-episode revival set to stream on Disney+, but fans will notice a significant change: Erik Per Sullivan, who portrayed Dewey, will not reprise his role. Instead, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, known for his performance in Fargo, will take over the character as Sullivan has stepped away from acting.
Frankie Muniz returns as the titular character Malcolm, joined by his on-screen parents Lois and Hal, played by Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston, respectively. Kaczmarek revealed last year that Sullivan is "very, very well" and has no interest in continuing his acting career. Since concluding his role on Malcolm in the Middle in 2006, where he started at age seven and wrapped up at 14, Sullivan has focused on his education, studying Victorian literature at a prestigious university, and is an avid fan of Dickens’ works.
Despite his absence at several cast reunions, Sullivan's contributions to the show remain fondly remembered. Malcolm in the Middle, which aired from 2000 to 2006, won seven Emmy Awards and showcased the hilariously dysfunctional family’s dynamics, especially focusing on Malcolm’s misadventures and relationships with his brothers and the family.
Production for the new episodes is set to kick off in Vancouver shortly, with the first episode introducing Malcolm's teenage daughter, portrayed by Keeley Karsten. The storyline hints at family chaos as Hal and Lois prepare for their 40th wedding anniversary. Returning cast members include Christopher Masterson (Francis) and Justin Berfield (Reese), with Kiana Madeira joining the cast as Malcolm's girlfriend. Riverdale actor Anthony Timpano will portray Jamie, while Vaughan Murrae is set to be introduced as the youngest sibling, Kelly. The excitement for the revival is palpable, with stars expressing their joy at reconnecting, humorously noting, “I get to yell at that kid again!”
