The situation has left many Afghans in fear for their safety, prompting hundreds of thousands to flee Iran back to Afghanistan, where challenges await them.

Iran has witnessed a mass exodus of Afghan refugees, with over 1.5 million expelled since January 2023, as the government raises national security concerns amidst a backdrop of conflict with Israel. The United Nations reports daily deportations peaked at about 50,000 individuals following accusations of Afghan collaboration with Israel's Mossad, particularly during recent military operations that heightened tensions in the region.

Many Afghan deportees, including Ali Ahmad (a pseudonym for protection), have come forward with horrific accounts of abuse while detained, claiming physical assaults and severe mistreatment by Iranian authorities. “They treated us like animals," he stated, recounting how he was beaten and stripped of his belongings, leaving him destitute upon his return.

Reports of espionage were amplified by Iranian media following the June conflict where Israel targeted Iranian military sites. This narrative has fueled a climate of fear among Afghans, with individuals feeling the weight of false accusations as they navigate life in Iran. Observers suggest the Iranian government is seeking scapegoats in the Afghans to deflect criticism of its own security failures.

Formal statements from Iranian authorities emphasized their commitment to returning Afghans with respect for human rights, yet the reality on the ground tells a different story. Beyond the more than 4 million undocumented Afghans already in the country, many had previously established lives in Iran, thus the abrupt deportations wreak havoc on their future.

Amidst rising anti-Afghan sentiment, Dr. Khadija Abbasi, an expert on forced migration, recognizes the shift in public attitude from welcome to hostility. This shift has been compounded by historical prejudice and misinformation linking Afghans to criminal acts in Iran, creating a precarious environment for Afghan refugees.

As Afghan returnees face an uncertain future under Taliban rule, the influx exacerbates an already strained system in Afghanistan, which continues to grapple with multiple humanitarian crises. These forced deportations not only threaten their safety but also set the stage for potential instability as both nations navigate the complex dynamics of displacement, misinformation, and national security.
