North Korea Refutes Claims of Propaganda Speaker Removal at Border

North Korea's leadership has firmly denied South Korea's assertion that it has dismantled propaganda loudspeakers along the border, reiterating its unyielding stance on relations with the South.

In a recent statement, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, declared that the regime has “never removed” its propaganda loudspeakers at the border and has no intention to do so. This rebuttal comes in response to South Korea’s military, which claimed that North Korea had taken steps to dismantle some of its border speakers shortly after Seoul likewise decommissioned parts of its own system. Kim labeled the South’s assertions as “unfounded” and “a red herring,” emphasizing that Pyongyang views Seoul’s broadcasts—ranging from K-pop to bizarre sounds—as acts of hostility.

Many residents in border areas of South Korea have expressed frustration over the disruptive noise from both nations, which can be particularly intrusive at night. In the past, North Korea has characterized these broadcasts from the South as acts of war, threatening retaliatory actions against the loudspeakers. The South re-initiated its broadcasts in June 2024 after a hiatus, coinciding with heightened tensions stemming from North’s provocative behaviors.

Although South Korea has made gestures to improve diplomatic relations, including halting its own broadcasts shortly after newly elected President Lee Jae Myung took office, the overall relationship between the two countries remains strained. Recently, North Korea issued warnings of “resolute counteraction” amidst upcoming military drills planned between South Korea and the United States.
