In brief

With approximately 40 tornadoes reported across Texas, North Carolina, Louisiana, Georgia, and Arkansas, four individuals lost their lives, and many more were injured as severe weather wreaked havoc in the region.

At least four people have died following a significant outbreak of tornadoes that ripped through the southern United States, causing widespread damage and power outages. Reports indicate that nearly 40 tornadoes touched down in Texas, North Carolina, Louisiana, Georgia, and Arkansas during Saturday and Sunday, leading to extensive destruction.According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the deaths included two individuals in Mississippi, one in Texas, and another in North Carolina. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves confirmed that one of the deceased in the state was from Adams County, about 92 miles (148km) west of Jackson, while the other was from Lowndes County, near the Alabama border. Reports also noted that at least ten people were injured throughout Mississippi as the storms left nearly 32,000 residents without power by Monday evening, down from a peak of around 100,000 after the storms. In Texas, the severe weather prompted the Storm Prediction Center to issue a "particularly dangerous situation" tornado watch for the first time, warning residents of the potential for multiple strong tornadoes. A 48-year-old woman was killed in Brazoria County, close to the Gulf Coast, with four others suffering non-critical injuries. Near Houston, in Montgomery County, approximately 300 structures were damaged, including 30 that were completely destroyed, as tornadoes with wind speeds up to 145 mph (233 km/h) swept through the region. The fatality in North Carolina was a 70-year-old man named Matthew Ronald Teeple, who died after a tree fell on his vehicle during the storm. NWS statistics indicate that the US averages around 800 reported tornadoes each year, accounting for about 80 deaths and 1,500 injuries. However, in 2023, the country has already recorded 1,762 tornadoes from January to November, marking the highest number since 2011.
