In brief

The Vatican has confirmed that the funeral for Pope Francis will take place on Saturday at St. Peter’s Basilica, featuring uncomplicated rituals that reflect his humble approach to leadership. This ceremony aims to symbolize his commitment to connecting the Roman Catholic Church with everyday people, particularly the disenfranchised and marginalized communities.

Political leaders, religious figures, and thousands of devotees from various corners of the globe are expected to gather for the event, which will be overseen by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals. In contrast to traditional papal funerals that often involve lavish rituals, Pope Francis' body will rest in a single coffin, eliminating the customary nested coffins. Furthermore, access for public viewing will be provided directly at the coffin, rather than on an elevated platform. In his recently released will, the late pope expressed specific preferences for his burial, requesting that his final resting place be a simple earth grave, devoid of extravagant decorations. The global mourning period has begun, with memorial Masses being celebrated from churches around the world, including sites in the Philippines and Argentina, his birthplace. Flags are being flown at half-staff in several countries as they observe official days of mourning in honor of the beloved pontiff.
