Article Text: The harrowing case of Edwin Chiloba, a well-known gay rights activist in Kenya, has reached a legal conclusion as a court found his roommate guilty of murder on Wednesday. This verdict comes nearly two years after Chiloba's tragic death sent shockwaves through the East African nation and stirred fears among its LGBTQ community.Chiloba's body was discovered stuffed inside a metal box along the roadside in Uasin Gishu County in January 2023, a discovery that led to international condemnation and calls for better protection of LGBTQ rights in Kenya. Jackton Odhiambo, a 25-year-old freelance photographer who lived with Chiloba, was determined to be the perpetrator of this violent act.In the ruling, Judge Reuben Nyambati Nyakundi of the Eldoret High Court revealed that Odhiambo had evidently planned the murder. The pair had last been seen together after a night out, and later, witnesses reported hearing cries from their apartment, which eventually ceased. Despite Odhiambo's involvement confirmed by DNA evidence, which indicated sexual contact with Chiloba before the murder, the judge expressed that the motive behind the heinous act remained elusive. “I went for an expedition, and I could not find what could have been the motive of causing the death of your dear friend,” stated Justice Nyakundi. This case has amplified discussions on the dire need for stronger protections for the LGBTQ community in Kenya, amid existing societal and legal challenges they face.
