In brief

Democratic lawmakers are seeking accountability for immigrant rights violations, spotlighting a significant wrongful deportation case on their trip to El Salvador.

Four Democratic lawmakers from the U.S. have landed in El Salvador, striving to secure the release of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was unjustly deported to a Central American prison. The lawmakers, including Representatives Robert Garcia, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, Yassamin Ansari, and Maxine E. Dexter, are amplifying pressure on the Trump administration, which has faced criticism for failing to act on the Supreme Court's directive to facilitate Garcia's return.Mr. Garcia, speaking publicly about the issue, highlighted the ongoing challenges immigrants face in the U.S., stating, “While Donald Trump continues to defy the Supreme Court, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is being held illegally in El Salvador after being wrongfully deported.” This trip follows Senator Chris Van Hollen’s recent visit, during which he managed to meet with Garcia after initial resistance from the Salvadoran government led by President Nayib Bukele.Garcia, a resident of Maryland, was deported in March alongside over 200 individuals alleged to have connections to notorious gangs. Despite entering the U.S. without documentation, a 2019 ruling determined that returning him to El Salvador would expose him to significant danger. A federal judge in Maryland subsequently ordered his return to the U.S., a ruling that the Supreme Court upheld earlier this month. While the Trump administration acknowledged the deportation was erroneous, it has since claimed the action was lawful. Meanwhile, Garcia has been transferred from the Terrorism Confinement Center to another detention facility in Santa Ana, further complicating the pleas for his release. The congressional delegation plans to engage with U.S. Embassy officials and human rights organizations to inquire about the status of others similarly deported. Their mission underscores the broader implications of immigration policies and the importance of due process rights for all individuals.
