In brief
Hopes for a festive Ramadan are dimmed for Palestinians in the West Bank as Israeli incursions lead to mass displacement, depriving many of the traditions that define the holy month.
In the West Bank, tensions peak as Israeli military operations continue to displace thousands of Palestinians, dampening the spirit of Ramadan. Once vibrant markets and festive gatherings have given way to heavy silence, as many families are forced to break their fast away from their homes. The sight of displaced families in Jenin paints a stark contrast to the cherished traditions of Ramadan. As Mahmoud Sukkar, a father from the West Bank, lamented, “Ramadan used to shine; now, it’s just darkness.” This year, the communal gatherings and festive meals of iftar, typically a time for sharing and celebration, have vanished amid the turmoil. With the streets once filled with laughter now cloaked in sadness, the situation is dire.Since January, an Israeli military operation aimed at combatting what officials call “terrorism” has resulted in the evacuation of approximately 40,000 Palestinians from Jenin and Tulkarm. The operation reportedly marks the most significant displacement of civilians in the region since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The ongoing military presence, including tanks and fortified positions, underscores the severity of the situation. As the holy month unfolds, the ongoing conflict not only disrupts daily life but also erases years of customs and traditions for the Palestinian community. Nearly 50 lives have been lost amid these operations, illustrating the profound human cost behind military pursuits. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements reinforcing the operations’ objectives offer little comfort to those enduring the hardships of displacement, isolation, and mourning during this sacred time.
