In brief

In the wake of President Bashar al-Assad’s ousting, countless Syrian families are grappling with the harsh consequences of war, as neighborhoods lie in ruins and millions remain displaced.

Lubna Labaad recalls walking through the remains of her neighborhood, Qaboun, in Damascus, only to find her home stripped bare. With the civil war ending abruptly in December, families eager to return are met with devastating destruction. Although some homes remain, many have been reduced to rubble. The ongoing crisis forced over 13 million Syrians to flee, including more than six million who escaped the country and approximately seven million internally displaced. As families like the Labaads try to navigate the chaos of their demolished communities, hope clashes with despair amid the ruins of their former lives.
