Universal Studios has announced plans to establish its first European theme park in Bedfordshire, England, set to open in 2031. The yet-to-be-named park will cover an expansive 476 acres and aims to combine popular American franchises, such as “Jurassic Park,” with beloved British icons like Paddington Bear, Dr. Who, and Harry Potter. This major development could transform the economic landscape of the area, creating approximately 28,000 jobs and generating nearly $64 billion (£50 billion) in local revenue by 2055.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer heralded the announcement as a critical success for his government, emphasizing the need to streamline operations that have historically bogged down large projects in the country. "Today we closed the deal on a multibillion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe,” Starmer stated.
While the project is positioned as a significant improvement for the sluggish British economy, it will take several years before visitors can experience the park, as extensive development is needed on the currently empty site located just a 35-minute train ride from London. This timeline introduces a level of uncertainty, reminiscent of prior difficulties faced by other theme park endeavors.
