In brief
In a daring scene at Toronto Pearson Airport, Delta Flight 4819 crash-landed but miraculously, all 80 on board escaped, though 18 were injured. Strong winds and heavy snowfall contributed to the incident as eyewitnesses report chaos.
On February 17, 2025, a terrifying scene unfolded at Toronto Pearson International Airport when Delta Flight 4819 experienced a dramatic crash landing. The Bombardier CRJ900, carrying 80 passengers from Minneapolis, flipped over after its wheels touched the icy runway, igniting fears for safety. As the aircraft skidded along the snow-covered tarmac, it ignited and then overturned, leaving passengers hanging upside down. Eyewitness accounts reveal harrowing moments as jet fuel streamed down the windows. “The absolute initial feeling is just, ‘Need to get out of this,’” shared Pete Carlson, a passenger. Despite the chaos, passengers and flight attendants managed to work together to reach the emergency exits. While the incident resulted in at least 18 injuries, including critical cases involving an adult and a child, everyone is expected to survive. Many passengers were discharged from the hospital by the end of the day. The crash coincided with powerful winds reaching up to 40 mph and snow flurries which may have contributed to the turbulence during landing. “The second that the wheels hit the ground, then everything happened,” recalled professional skier Pete Koukov, who was on board, reflecting on how quickly fear turned into a fight for survival. In stark contrast to recent aviation tragedies, Delta Flight 4819's outcome brings relief and raises questions about the airline's safety protocols amidst challenging weather conditions. Authorities are investigating the incident to glean insights for preventing future occurrences.
