US rapper Soulja Boy, known for his viral hit "Crank That (Soulja Boy)," has been arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of weapons possession. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that the rapper, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was apprehended around 2:35 AM local time on Sunday in the Melrose area after officers executed a traffic stop. Authorities claim that Way, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of a firearm.
The 35-year-old rapper's legal troubles continue as he faces allegations of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Soulja Boy's rise to fame in 2007 was marked by the success of his hit song, which was linked to a significant dance trend. CBS News has reached out to Soulja Boy’s representatives for further comment on the arrest.
Earlier this year, in an unrelated case, the rapper was ordered to pay $4.25 million to a woman who accused him of sexual battery, assault, and gender violence. The unnamed plaintiff claimed that he regularly raped and abused her while she was employed as his assistant. Soulja Boy denied the allegations, maintaining that their encounters were consensual, yet a jury found him liable during the civil trial.
