The probe specifically implicated Dr. Kelvin Alaneme, a Nigerian doctor formerly associated with the NHS, in illicit activities that exploit migrants seeking opportunities.
The revelations underscore the alarming ease with which such agents operate, profiting off the vulnerabilities of aspiring workers. One key tactic includes illegally selling positions within UK care companies, often creating fictitious payroll systems to hide the non-existence of these jobs. David-Olivia Vicol, CEO of the Work Rights Centre, labels the exploitation linked to the Health and Care Work visa as a "national crisis" due to the power imbalance created in the sponsorship system.
The investigation's secret footage captured Dr. Alaneme offering lucrative business opportunities to potential agents and revealing how he manipulated job vacancies for personal gain. He purportedly offered £2,000 for each care home vacancy and planned to charge candidates for the chance to secure nonexistent jobs, despite legal stipulations against such practices.
One victim, identified as Praise, revealed he was duped into paying over £10,000 for a promised position that never materialized, reflecting a broader pattern of exploitation. In another instance, the reporting uncovered the dubious practices of Nana Akwasi Agyemang-Prempeh, another recruitment agent pivoting to different sectors, including construction, to maintain their scam operations.
The Home Office acknowledged the exploitation occurring within the visa system, recently revoking the sponsorship licenses of at least 470 companies. The government has also initiated measures aimed at cracking down on such scams and enhancing regulations for overseas worker recruitment.
