A 53-year-old man, Paul Doyle, has been charged in connection with a shocking incident that occurred during a celebratory parade for Liverpool F.C.'s Premier League victory. The event turned tragic on May 30, 2025, when Doyle allegedly drove his vehicle into a gathering of fans, leaving 79 people injured, including four children. Among those hurt, the youngest was just 9 years old.
At Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Doyle, a former Royal Marine and father of three, confirmed his identity, appearing visibly emotional as he faced multiple serious charges. These include dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm with intent, alongside other offenses related to the injuries sustained by victims.
Witness accounts detail a chaotic scene as the car sped into crowds on Water Street shortly after 6 p.m., just as they were dispersing from the celebration. Prosecutor Philip Astbury described the action as a deliberate attack on the unsuspecting crowd. Court sessions revealed that at least 50 of the injured required hospital treatment, with most affected individuals being family members who came to celebrate the football team's triumph.
Doyle's provisional trial date is set for November 24. For now, he remains in custody, with a plea hearing scheduled for August 14. Authorities indicate that the investigation is ongoing, and there is a possibility for additional charges as they sift through a significant amount of evidence, including video footage of the incident and testimonies from witnesses.
Sarah Hammond, the regional chief prosecutor, stated that the charges may be modified as the case develops, reinforcing the gravity of the investigation amidst the tragic fallout of what should have been a joyous celebration for the Liverpool football community.
