In brief

After a widespread power outage that affected critical infrastructure for 18 hours, Spain's electricity has largely returned to normal, with neighboring Portugal still working to restore full service. The cause of the blackout remains unclear, but authorities have ruled out foul play.

Spain's national power company, Red Eléctrica, announced early Tuesday that the vast majority of the country had electricity restored, with 99 percent of power demand met. The restoration efforts came after an extensive blackout that began on Monday, affecting not only Spain but also neighboring Portugal, where airports, trains, and traffic lights were impacted, leaving many travelers stranded.By 6 a.m. local time, all substations within Peninsular Spain were operational again, marking a significant turnaround from the previous day’s chaos. In Portugal, the state's electricity and gas supplier, REN, reported a restoration of 85 out of 89 substations, although some regions continued to experience power cuts.As the cause of the outage remained under investigation, officials confirmed that there were no immediate indications of foul play or malicious cyber interference. The situation continues to develop as recovery efforts are underway and authorities assess the impact of the significant blackout that left millions in the dark across the Iberian Peninsula.
