Xu feihong made headlines while addressing an event in New Delhi, voicing Beijing's strong opposition to the recently implemented US tariffs on Indian goods. He characterized the US as a "bully" leveraging its trade policies unfairly against other nations, particularly India, which faces tariffs as high as 50%. These tariffs come after the US imposed a significant penalty earlier this month, exacerbating tensions over India’s energy imports from Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical complexities.

"In silence, we only embolden the bully," Xu stated, highlighting the dire implications for international trade dynamics. The ambassador pointed to the backdrop of deteriorating relations between India and the US, stemming from India's increased importation of affordable Russian oil. "India must procure the most cost-effective crude available to support its populace during these challenging economic times," Xu remarked, referring to India's rationale behind purchasing Russian oil.

Despite the tense trade ties with Washington, recent actions suggest a thaw in the relationship between India and China. The two countries, which have had a tumultuous history exacerbated by clashes in Ladakh in 2020, seem to be actively seeking to mend their relationship. Just days ago, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in talks in Delhi, framing India and China as essential economic allies rather than adversaries. Xu echoed this sentiment, urging both nations to perceive each other as partners and highlighting the importance of unity for global stability.

The ambassador encouraged Indian businesses to invest in China while also requesting that India establish a fair and equitable business environment for Chinese enterprises. He warned that ongoing trade and tariff conflicts could disrupt the global economic system, referring to the "power politics" that threatens international relations. Xu pledged China's support for India, expressing a commitment to upholding the multilateral trading system spearheaded by the World Trade Organization (WTO).

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in China, both nations are hopeful that this meeting will catalyze stronger bilateral ties.
