Rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was stabbed on Tuesday morning at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, approximately 75 miles (120km) north of Los Angeles. Following the incident, prison staff promptly activated emergency services and provided medical assistance until Lanez was transported to a local medical facility for further treatment, as stated by Pedro Calderón Michel from the state’s corrections department.
Details regarding the rapper's condition remain unclear; however, reports indicate that his injuries are non-life threatening. An internal investigation into the motive behind the attack is currently underway, with the stabbing occurring around 7:20 a.m. local time (15:20 GMT).
Lanez is incarcerated due to a 2023 conviction involving three felony gun-related charges for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion during a dispute after a party in 2020. The confrontation unfolded when the pair argued while seated in a vehicle, escalating to Lanez firing shots at the ground and demanding Megan to “dance”. As a result of the incident, Megan required surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot. Despite being sentenced, Lanez has consistently professed his innocence and refused to issue an apology, leading to a divided response from the hip-hop community regarding his conviction.
Notably, Lanez has enjoyed a successful career, boasting seven US top 10 albums prior to his incarceration, and has hinted at releasing a new album titled "Peterson" from prison.
