Several French prisons experienced a tumultuous night as they were subjected to a series of violent attacks, causing significant concern within the nation. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed in a statement that the facilities faced "intimidation attempts," including the burning of vehicles and gunfire incidents.
Reports indicate that multiple prisons, including those in Toulon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Valence, Nîmes, Luynes, Villepinte, and Nanterre, were specifically targeted during the incidents. La Parisien revealed that vehicles parked within prison premises were set ablaze while a shooting incident was reported at the Toulon prison involving a firearm.
In response, Darmanin announced that he would visit the Toulon area to extend his support to the security personnel affected by the attacks. Although he refrained from directly assigning blame for these incidents, he affirmed the government's commitment to implementing measures aimed at "profoundly disrupting" criminal networks. The surge in violence highlights growing tensions and security concerns within France's correctional system.
