Jakarta — Batam’s Nongsa Digital Park signed a memorandum of understanding with Swiss sovereign cloud and AI firm PHOENIQS AG on 29 October 2026, a move that will place the Special Economic Zone on the map as the region’s next AI supercomputer hub, the Indonesian Embassy in Bern said.
In Basel‑Landschaft, where PHOENIQS AG’s own AI supercomputer sits, the MoU was signed by PHOENIQS AG Executive Chairman Thomas Taroni and Nongsa Digital Park Chief Business Officer Marco Bardelli, with Basel‑Landschaft Government President Thomi Jourdan and Indonesian Ambassador Ngurah Swajaya in attendance.
As Southeast Asia’s largest economy, with a population of 280 million, a young demographic, and high digital connectivity, Indonesia is not just a potential market but a perfect laboratory for large‑scale, AI‑based digital technology innovation,
Swajaya told Antara, underscoring how Indonesia’s size and connectivity make it ideal for testing large‑scale AI innovations.
The agreement will see PHOENIQS AG bring sovereign cloud and AI technology—previously deployed in telecommunications and infrastructure projects—to the park, where new AI supercomputers and data centers will be built to serve banking, telecommunications and smart manufacturing sectors.
Unlike conventional data‑residency models, the partnership will grant data owners full control—sovereignty—over AI‑processed data, relying on supercomputing and quantum technology to maintain independence in a technology‑driven geopolitical landscape.
With the park’s existing international and regional connectivity, the new facilities aim to strengthen Indonesia’s digital sovereignty and position Southeast Asia as a key hub for AI‑based digital innovation.
