Reporting from Dakar’s Old Courthouse, where excitement fills the air, the 2024 Dakar Biennale has witnessed a remarkable shift as teenagers and young adults take center stage. Every two years, this esteemed event draws in affluent collectors and sophisticated art lovers. However, this year a new wave of attendees—mostly Senegalese youth—are adding a refreshing and dynamic touch to the atmosphere.
Arriving in casual outfits, from flip-flops to trendy leather pants, young attendees are engaging with contemporary art for the first time, many delighted by its accessibility and the lively ambiance. Attracted by the free admission and stunning visuals, they flock to the exhibitions, often accompanied by friends or on dates.
“It’s fun, it’s free, it’s beautiful and it’s so Instagrammable,” says 17-year-old Sokna Mbene Thiam, who joined her classmates to experience the artwork up close. For many, this festival serves as an entry point to the world of global art, as they share their experiences on social media, effectively merging personal expression with artistic appreciation.
As Senegal’s new president encourages youth engagement, the biennale has transformed into a vibrant cultural melting pot, symbolizing the intersection of tradition and modernity—an event that reflects both the rich artistic heritage of Senegal and the promise of a new generation of creatives eager to make their mark.
