In brief

Romania is facing political uncertainty after the top court ordered a complete recount of ballots from the first round of presidential elections, following Calin Georgescu’s surprising lead. The ultranationalist, often described as pro-Russia and previously underestimated, garnered 22.9 percent of votes. His notable visibility on platforms like TikTok contributed to his unexpected success. In the upcoming runoff on December 8, Georgescu will compete against centrist Elena Lasconi, who received 19.2 percent.

The recount timing may obstruct the scheduled runoff if the initial results remain unverified. This court decision arose from complaints filed by candidate Cristian Vasile Terhes regarding alleged election irregularities. Amidst these electoral tensions, the Supreme Council of National Defense divulged that Romania has faced potential “cyberattacks” targeting the electoral integrity, challenging the country’s efforts to maintain social stability and national security as a NATO member bordering Ukraine.
