In brief

Ecuadorian security forces successfully apprehended gang leader José Adolfo Macías, known as “Fito,” whose 2024 prison escape triggered nationwide violence. President Daniel Noboa announced the capture via social media, confirming plans for extradition to the U.S. where he faces serious drug and weapon smuggling accusations. The leader of Los Choneros, one of Ecuador's most dangerous criminal organizations, Macías’s escape had incited riots and chaos across the country, prompting a 60-day state of emergency.

On Wednesday, Ecuadorian authorities found the 45-year-old in an underground bunker in Manta, approximately 120 miles from Guayaquil, the nation’s largest city. His arrest was made public as Interior Minister John Reimberg shared details of the operation, supported by police and military forces. Footage displayed officers apprehending Macías, who was handcuffed and shirtless, ready to be transferred to Guayaquil. Following his escape, which occurred just two months after President Noboa's victory and amid promises to combat gang violence, the military presented visuals of the capture. This event follows U.S. sanctions against Macías and Los Choneros earlier in 2024. The U.S. Embassy expressed congratulations, marking a significant step in the fight against organized crime in Ecuador.
