In brief

A comprehensive evaluation by the International Union for Conservation of Nature reveals that 38% of tree species globally are threatened, with agriculture, logging, and urbanization as primary dangers.

A newly released assessment indicates that more than one-third of the world’s tree species are at risk of extinction, highlighting the ongoing environmental crisis that affects biodiversity. The findings, unveiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) during the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia, underline the vital role trees play in sustaining various ecosystems and the life they support. The report indicates that 38% of the approximately 60,000 known tree species are facing threats, due in large part to human activities such as agriculture, logging, and urban development. "Trees are fundamental to life on Earth, supporting ecosystems and the livelihoods of millions," Grethel Aguilar, the IUCN's director general, emphasized in her statements regarding the urgent need for conservation efforts. This assessment is considered the first of its kind to encompass over 80% of existing tree species, relying on the expertise of more than a thousand researchers across the globe. Notably, island biodiversity is particularly at risk, as many unique species have small populations confined to specific locations. For instance, Madagascar is experiencing significant loss among its rosewoods and ebonies, while Borneo has seen 99 species from the Dipterocarpaceae family facing peril. In Cuba, the critically endangered Harpalyce macrocarpa has dwindled to fewer than 75 mature trees.Experts warn that without immediate intervention, the destruction of habitats and the coupled threats of industrialization could worsen the current situation dramatically. The reinforcement of conservation strategies and raising awareness about deforestation’s impact are seen as imperative steps toward safeguarding the planet's trees and maintaining the ecosystems dependent on them.
