In brief
In a harrowing tale of survival, 61-year-old Peruvian fisherman Máximo Napa Castro was rescued after spending 95 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean, following his departure from the port of Marcona on December 7.
On March 12, rescue came from an Ecuadorean tuna vessel that spotted Castro’s distressed boat hundreds of miles offshore. Throughout his isolation, Castro survived on a meager diet of cockroaches, birds, and eventually, turtle blood itself. In moments of desperation, he prayed for deliverance, expressing doubt and seeking forgiveness as he clung to faith in a hopeful outcome. "I said to him, ‘What am I going to find here?’” Castro recounted. “Somebody is coming or a helicopter is coming." His tenacity and faith were rewarded when help finally arrived, marking the end of a baffling tragedy that tested the limits of human endurance.
