Israel has unleashed sustained air and ground attacks on Gaza City, targeting key neighborhoods as their military prepares for an impending large-scale offensive in the region. On the ground, reports indicate that an estimated one million Palestinians are at risk as air raids continue unabated.

Residents have described explosive sounds echoing through northern and eastern parts of the city while Israeli troops conducted operations resulting in the destruction of buildings in the Jabalia refugee camp to the north. According to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, the current violence has resulted in 62,686 deaths and nearly 158,000 injuries since the onset of hostilities following a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which killed around 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains resolute in his commitment to defeating Hamas, disregarding international outcry over the extensive military actions, which have mobilized about 60,000 reservists. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed they were operating in multiple regions, including the neighborhoods of Zeitoun and Shejayia, seeking to expand military engagement and prevent Hamas from regrouping.

In parallel developments, the World Health Organization reported the release of a staff member held by the IDF since July 21, but details surrounding the incident remain scarce. The pressure on Netanyahu from Israeli families with hostages is increasing, prompting demands for negotiations to end the fighting to bring their loved ones home.

Undeterred, Israel announced plans for a complete takeover of the Gaza Strip after negotiations aimed at a ceasefire and hostage release faltered last month. While mediators from Qatar and Egypt are striving to broker a ceasefire leading to a 60-day truce, Israeli officials have rejected partial agreements, insisting on a full release of all hostages.

Israeli defense ministers have indicated that the consequences for Hamas may be dire, possibly leading to significant destruction in Gaza City unless there is disarmament and full compliance. As part of their strategy, the Israeli military intends to evacuate the city’s entire population to safer shelters in the south before launching a ground offensive.

Nonetheless, humanitarian agencies underscore the catastrophic implications such operations will have. Current estimates suggest over 90% of Gaza’s homes are destroyed or severely damaged, and critical infrastructure for health and sanitation systems has disintegrated. According to UN reports, 18 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are only partially operational, illuminating the dire conditions that residents are facing. Recent confirmations of famine conditions in the area have highlighted the urgent need for assistance as the situation continues to deteriorate.
