In brief

An investigation revealed that Maashorst officials may never recover the works, which included the Warhol piece from the iconic "Reigning Queens" series.

In a stunning oversight, the Dutch municipality of Maashorst has reportedly thrown away a valuable silk-screen print created by renowned artist Andy Warhol, depicting former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, alongside nearly 50 other artworks. An independent probe commissioned by the municipality indicated that the artwork likely ended up in the trash following renovations at the town hall. Officials from Maashorst conveyed in a statement that the missing art pieces might be irretrievable, leaving the town's leadership with little hope of recovering them. “It’s not likely that the missing artworks will ever be found,” stated the municipality's mayor and aldermen in a recent letter to the council. The discarded Warhol piece, which was part of the celebrated "Reigning Queens" series from 1985, not only featured Queen Beatrix but also portrayed other prominent monarchs such as Queen Elizabeth II of England, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Eswatini. Its loss raises concerns about the administrative processes concerning the preservation of cultural heritage in public institutions.
