In brief
Authorities confirm that 20-year-old Sam Benastick has been rescued alive after going missing for over five weeks in British Columbia’s backcountry.
On Tuesday, a remarkable discovery was made in the remote reaches of British Columbia when a missing hiker was found alive after being lost for more than five weeks. Sam Benastick, a 20-year-old outdoor enthusiast, was reported missing on October 19 after he did not return from a 10-day fishing and hiking expedition in the Redfern-Keily Park area of the northern Rocky Mountains. Initially, search operations were suspended in late October after continued efforts yielded no results in the rugged terrain where temperatures plummeted to -20C (-4F).Mr. Benastick was unexpectedly located by two workers heading towards the Redfern Lake trail. The men recognized him and provided immediate assistance. Gratefully, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Cpl. Madonna Saunderson shared that the discovery was a relief, given the time elapsed since he went missing. According to reports, Mr. Benastick had faced multiple challenges during his time in the wilderness. After failing initially to navigate back, he sheltered in his car for two days before moving to a nearby creek where he established a camp for roughly 10 to 15 days.Equipped with only limited supplies, including a tarp, a backpack, and basic camping gear, his situation grew dire as winter conditions intensified with snowfall. Survival expert Adam Smith from Prince George Search and Rescue acknowledged the formidable odds against survival in such conditions, even for experienced hikers. The extensive search and rescue operations coordinated by multiple agencies, including Canadian Rangers and family volunteers, covered a large area of difficult terrain. While details of his exact condition are still forthcoming, reports indicate that Mr. Benastick was in rough shape when found. Local inn owner Mike Reid, who became acquainted with Mr. Benastick’s family during search operations, shared how the hiker had ingeniously cut his sleeping bag to conserve body heat. Before his rescue, the last confirmed sighting of Mr. Benastick involved him riding his red dirt bike near Redfern Lake, the largest in the park.As investigations continue, Smith expressed an eagerness to learn more about Mr. Benastick’s survival story in order to improve future search and rescue protocols in such challenging environments.
