In brief

On July 1, 2025, Denmark implemented a significant change in its military policy by allowing women who have turned 18 to enter the lottery for compulsory military service. This decision comes as a move to expand the country's armed forces in light of the rising security dilemma posed by Russia's actions in Europe. The announcement to include women in the draft was first made in March and gained parliamentary approval in June, reflecting a broader strategy to bolster Denmark's military capabilities.

Although women were able to volunteer in the Danish military before, they were excluded from the compulsory lottery system that applied to men. Currently, they represent about ten percent of the armed forces, which consists of 16,600 personnel in total. Denmark’s defense chief, Michael W. Hyldgaard, emphasized the need to mobilize all available resources in the current security climate, stating, "This requires that we recruit from all over society."Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Denmark has adopted a more proactive defense posture, including plans for increased military spending. While many Danish leaders don’t anticipate an immediate Russian threat within their borders, there is growing concern about Russian activities in the Baltic Sea and Arctic regions. Senior researcher Mikkel Runge Olesen noted that Denmark's defense discussions are informed by fears surrounding Russia's regional influence rather than an imminent attack. The conscription changes aim to ensure Denmark can respond effectively to evolving security challenges. The defense community in Denmark is adapting to these developments, with expectations that the inclusion of women in military activities will enhance the overall capacity of the armed forces.
