JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — When Juan and Madison Pestana embarked on their first date in 2023, Juan made a promise to always keep fresh flowers on the kitchen table. For nearly two years, he fulfilled that vow, making every day bloom with romance.
Their love story unfolded rapidly: Madison, an introverted medical student from North Carolina, was swept off her feet by Juan, a charming construction business owner from Venezuela. Their connection deepened after one memorable meeting at a sushi bar that turned into a late-night conversation until the early morning hours.
“He is literally my best friend … and the only person I’ve ever thought truly understood me,” Madison expressed. “He truly is the love of my life.”
However, their fairy tale was rudely interrupted when immigration agents targeted their Miami apartment on the day of Madison’s medical school graduation. On May 9, Juan was taken into custody, leaving Madison distraught as she witnessed him being tackled to the ground. “That shouldn’t be the word that people are using when proper law enforcement is taking people into proper custody,” Madison asserted.
Since then, Juan has remained detained, classified as being in the country unlawfully according to immigration authorities. Madison, now adjusting to life in Jacksonville for her surgical residency, drives over 300 miles every weekend to see her husband—each visit allowing only brief moments of physical contact.
