In brief

The Membertou First Nation has made remarkable strides under Chief Terry Paul's leadership, securing major investments that have revitalized its economy and promoted cultural revival, including language preservation and improved education for youth.

The journey to Cape Breton Island, a picturesque part of Nova Scotia, is often touted as one of the world's must-experience road trips, a sentiment echoed by a local car rental agent during my arrival in Halifax. However, my focus quickly shifted from the scenic views to the growing success story of Membertou First Nation, an Indigenous community on the island making notable advances in economic development. Under the guidance of its chief, Terry Paul, Membertou has emerged as a pioneering force in Canada's seafood industry, leading a coalition that executed the largest-ever investment by Indigenous groups when they acquired 50 percent of Clearwater Seafoods in 2021 for 1 billion Canadian dollars. Recently, Membertou struck another ambitious deal with another First Nation to acquire one of Canada’s oldest shipyards, further positioning itself as a key player in the economy. With plans underway to buy back land to expand their community and a surge in graduation rates, the changes in Membertou are substantial. Projects aimed at revitalizing the Mi’kmaq language are flourishing, and the community fosters a youthful population enthusiastic about staying and contributing to its growth. After a lengthy drive, I was greeted by the unmistakable welcome sign of Membertou, a bold red statement that proclaimed, “Membertou: Welcoming the World.” This sentiment embodies the community's spirit and determination to thrive in today’s economic landscape.
