KERRVILLE, Texas (PulseWire) — Camp Mystic has announced plans to reopen next summer despite the tragic flooding in July that swept away 27 campers and counselors. The camp, located by the Guadalupe River, was devastated when flash floods hit during the Fourth of July celebrations. In total, Texas’ recent flooding led to the deaths of at least 136 individuals, with significant destruction of homes and vehicles. In communications sent out to families of the victims on Monday, Camp Mystic assured that safety protocols will align with new legislation introduced in response to the tragedy. This includes preventing cabins in flood-prone areas and mandating emergency plans and training for camp staff.Additionally, a memorial will be constructed at the camp, honoring the memories of the girls who lost their lives. Our intent is to encapsulate their beauty, kindness, and joy in the memorial’s design, the email stated. The measures came about after parents of the victims rallied for legislative changes to ensure better safety practices across children's camps. One significant bill includes allocation of $240 million from the state's rainy day fund aimed at disaster relief and improved emergency systems. While Camp Mystic Guadalupe remains closed due to damages, Camp Mystic Cypress Lake, which opened in 2020, will be available for campers next summer as repairs and safety improvements continue. Camp leaders are collaborating with engineers to ensure these necessary changes are effectively implemented.
